The Brisbane City pops Orchestra is delighted to be presenting a very special program - “Gold and Silver” for our last concert of 2021! We will be performing a wide variety of well-known musical favourites that we all hold precious and treasure, as the title suggests.

The orchestra is looking forward to bringing you the Overture from the much-loved Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as the beautiful Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni and a selection of some of the wonderful Dances form the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky.

We will have you dancing in the aisles to Lehar’s Gold and Silver Waltz and humming along to a selection from his very popular Merry Widow! The BCPO will also be performing some golden oldies- the very lyrical love theme Shadow of Your Smile by Johnny Mandel, as well as a sentimental favourite, As Time Goes By.

The orchestra is thrilled to bring back one of our most popular guest artists, soprano Leslie Martin-Nightingale. Leslie will delight you with her performance of Waltzing in the Clouds, made famous by Deanna Durbin, and the ever-popular Ciribiribin.

We are excited to have one of Leslie’s very talented vocal students performing as well, Isabella  Foong only 13 years old, will perform the beautiful song, Il Bacio by Arditi and then teacher and student will perform the very entertaining Cat Duet by Rossini.

The BCPO is excited to welcome back our favourite compere, Martin Daubney, who will also be presenting, with help from the orchestra, a great Australian classic, The Man from Snowy River!

What a fantastic show to finish the year – such great music and such amazing performances! Please join the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra for a truly memorable afternoon of Gold and Silver!!

Adrian Head MMus, BMus (Conductor)

Over the last three decades Adrian has conducted numerous orchestras & ensembles, nationally & overseas, including the Janacek Philharmonic, the Dohnanyi Symphony, & the Ady Ensemble- which he founded in 2011, that performs standard repertoire & newly written commissions. In 2016 he studied conducting with Gabor Hollerung in Budapest, Hungary, & in 2017 he travelled to the Czech Republic to study with renowned Finnish conducting pedagogue, Jorma Panula. 2017 also saw Adrian voted a 4MBS Treasured Queensland Classical Musician.

In early 2020, Adrian planned & conducted two concerts with the Ipswich City Symphony Orchestra, to raise funds for those affected by the bushfires, along with the Rural Fire Service. The last two years have also seen Adrian involved with “Spirit Orphan”, a new opera in development based upon the 2019/20 bushfires, conducting both performances and recording sessions of the opera.

Maleny Singers

Formed in 2003 by Margaret Taylor, to give local singers the chance to perform and enjoy the interaction of working and singing together.  During the first two years the Singers performed at various Christmas Carol services and other community concerts.   Margaret decided that broader boundaries needed to be set and they undertook to perform one major production each year, (as well as continuing the local events), beginning with Trial by Jury by Gilbert & Sullivan and over a period of 18 years have had major successes with more G & S, and operettas by Lehar, J Strauss and Offenbach all directed by Margaret.

The Maleny Singers have stretched themselves even further with a highlighted version of Elijah by F. Mendelssohn, The Magic Flute by Mozart, Carmen, and The Marriage of Figaro.

Leslie Martin (Soprano)

Known and loved by Brisbane City Pops Orchestra audiences through a relationship built over many years, Leslie Martin-Nightingale has been performing professionally for over 25 years, working with Opera Australia, Opera Queensland and internationally. Her enthusiasm for sharing her love of opera and the stage has also seen her perform for Corporate functions, Festivals, in parks, restaurants and local halls, in schools, with circus performers, and on the beach.

Apart from working at the Sydney Opera House other career highlights include singing Susanna in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in the Czech Republic and the Queen of the Night under Moffat Oxenbould’s direction; working with Anthony Warlow in Patience and with Director, Gale Edwards in Sweeney Todd. She has sung with the Queensland Pops Orchestra; the Royal Australian Navy Band; and the Australian Army Band Brisbane. Audiences have enjoyed her performances at the Brisbane City Hall and also at the Sydney Town Hall, where she sang solos plus duets with David Hobson. Leslie is delighted to be performing with the Maleny Singers under Margaret Taylor again.

Leslie puts her vast performance experience and vocal expertise to use by sharing her knowledge with aspiring Brisbane singers of all levels, ages and styles. Through her business, Success on Stage, Leslie teaches how to sing as well as how to perform and, most importantly, provides real performance experience for her prodigies.

Another string to her bow is as an announcer of Thursday Night Opera on 4MBS Classic FM for whom she also creates workshops, performances and other events.

You can hear Leslie on many recordings including: Sogno d’Italia (Dream of Italy), an album of Italian songs and arias; her solo CD, Treasures, showcasing music made famous by Gladys Moncrieff, June Bronhill, Jeanette MacDonald and Kathryn Grayson; Say Hello to the Opera for ABC Kids; and Vavachi Classic Occasions’ recording Showstoppers. Leslie also appears on Opera Australia’s video-recordings of Patience and Die Fledermaus.
