The Brisbane City Pops Orchestra is delighted to present their second amazing concert for 2021, “Another Op’nin’ Another Show.” This show celebrates some of the very best music ever written for the world’s most-loved musicals. The orchestra will present a selection of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s most beautiful melodies, as well as the very well-known music of Jerome Robbins. You will be tapping your feet as you enjoy our Musical Comedy Memories! One of the masters of musicals, Cole Porter, will be featured as we perform music from Kiss Me Kate, including the inspiration for our concert, Another Op’nin’ Another Show. You will also be entertained by pieces from a very popular modern musical, Wicked, by Stephen Schwartz, the story based on the same book that The Wizard of Oz came from.

The BCPO are thrilled to again welcome our truly incredible soloists, The 7 Sopranos, known as Australia’s most beautiful voices! You will be amazed by their performances of Brindisi from La Traviata by Mozart, The Flower Duet from Lakme by Delibes, the rousing Toreador’s Song from Carmen by Bizet and the truly sublime Danny Boy! The orchestra will also perform some beautiful old favourites – Send in the Clowns by Sondheim, Belle of the Ball by Leroy Anderson, an excerpt from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart and more. Please join the BCPO for a thoroughly entertaining afternoon full of amazing singing and some of your favourite music as we present Another Op’nin’ Another Show!

Andrew Robinson (Conductor)

Former resident conductor of the St Lucia Orchestra (now BCPO), Andrew Robinson has conducted many of the leading orchestras in Australia and the US. Winner of the ABC- Westfield Young Conductor of the Year award in 1997, he was Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra from 1998-2001, performing with the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. He has also conducted performances at the New York City Ballet and with numerous other American orchestras, as well as working with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. In Australia, he has appeared with the Queensland Symphony, the Tasmanian Symphony, the Melbourne Symphony, the Canberra Symphony, the State Orchestra of Victoria, and the Pacific Chamber Orchestra, among numerous others. From 2007-2012 he led the Queensland Philanthropic Orchestra, a charitable music project that raised nearly $40,000 for Queensland medical research.

An experienced music educator, Andrew served from 2000-2002 on the conducting faculty at the University of Southern California, one of the premier music schools in the US. He was Music Director of the inaugural Auckland Philharmonia Summer School in 2000, and from 2003-2008 held the same position with the Young Conservatorium Symphony at Griffith University.

Andrew first studied flute at the Canberra School of Music before turning to conducting. In 1998 he was selected as one of three young conductors from around the world to perform in Carnegie Hall at the inaugural Carnegie Hall Conductor’s Workshop, and subsequently was a Conducting Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. An accomplished flautist, Andrew won the 7 th Australian Flute Competition in 1995, and continues to perform occasionally around Brisbane. He qualified as an optometrist in 2006 and is now a partner in private practice in Bardon.

The 7 Sopranos (Guest Artists)

The 7 Sopranos were conceived in 2009 following an invitation to acclaimed opera singer Tarita Botsman to perform at a prestigious outdoor event at the iconic Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Utilising her operatic pedigree and industry connections developed from her career on the operatic stage, Botsman called upon fellow singers to form a group that combined the voices of seven opera singers and their journey began.

The world class voices of the newly formed 7 Sopranos combined with such a unique backdrop had a huge impact and became an instant hit, quickly followed by further worldwide appearances and a recording contract with ABC Music (a subsidiary of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation) which debuted at No 2 on the Aria Charts. Their most recent album POPCORN, has been selling well at their new show, Songs from Stage and Screen.

What’s most striking about The 7 Sopranos, is their commanding stage presence and vocal prowess. With their refined vocal skills this operatic ensemble made up of seven talented women on stage makes show-stopping headlines wherever they go. They convert the inconvertible to the power and versatility of classically trained performers with their huge breadth of work covering everything from show tunes to musical theatre to contemporary songs. Their irresistible style, personas and unique sound appeal to music lovers everywhere.

Named as “Australia’s most beautiful voices,” the artists that form the ensemble are the kind of role models young girls should have: an ensemble of talented, strong and passionate women doing what they love, on their own terms.

From Dubai to Dubbo, The 7 Sopranos have clocked up hundreds of appearances across the globe. Reaching out to a new audience of music lovers, they successfully straddle the divide between opera and mainstream music, creating their own unique fusion of faithful classical traditions and techniques meshed with contemporary music, enchanting new and enthusiastic audiences across the globe.  They continue their touring success across Australia and internationally: an accessible, affordable, living and breathing versatile all-female ensemble of breath-taking music makers.
